Fan Expo Canada Adventure!
( Or how I survived my first Cosplay experience.)
Thursday August 28th, 2014
I take my teenage son to his first big Sci-Fi/Anime/Horror/Comic/Gaming con, Fan Expo. We go with a friend of mine and her son. Both boys are thrilled. The “community” area, where the Doctor Who Society of Canada/ The Toronto Steampunk Society/ Toronto Brown Coats among many other wonderful and active clubs, is a big hit with the boys. The gaming area has them busy for hours, and I do mean “hours”. My son is particularly enamoured with the different people who are Cosplaying. Mind you, so am I.

Message from my friend Siri about our planned visit to Fan Expo on the Sunday. I respond by telling her, ” I’m really tempted to Cosplay after going last night…”
I receive a resounding chorus of “Dooo iiits!” from her and her brother, Mikkel. He is going as the 5th Doctor. I decide after much discussion and thought, to Cosplay ( or Crossplay) as the 9th Doctor. I have the leather jacket, the black pants, and black boots. I nip over to the Joe Fresh at my local Lablaws ( a grocery chain, here in Toronto) and pick up a v-neck t-shirt for a whopping 6 bucks. Thank you, BBC.

Early Saturday morning, I head over to my barber, Fabian, to get my hair shorn. I explain to him what I want to do. “Yeah, I know. It’s mad, isn’t it?” I say to him. He thinks it’s a hoot and proceeds with the #3 clippers. Chop! Chop! Buzz!
I still need a sonic screw driver. I look online. There are some great sources to make them, but what I don’t have is a lot of time. Then I find a “How to make a Sonic Screwdriver out of Lego” Instructable. Fantastic! There is ALOT of Lego in this house. I spend the next hour or so digging through boxes of Lego for mostly the right parts and put it together. Almost there.

Off we go to Fan Expo. It’s a super hot day and there is no way I’m going to put a leather jacket on until I am in the air conditioned building.
Once inside, I put the last piece of my costume on and pull out the Lego Sonic Screwdriver. We are started on our Cosplay journey…
I have to say, it was loads of fun. Getting to pose in photos with Daleks, the Tardis and other Whovians dressed as different Doctors and their companions.
Would I do it again?
Yes. Yes I would.
(By the way, friend Siri will be blogging her Fan Expo Experience and as soon as it’s up, I will be posting the link.)
